Risk Analysis in Engineering and Economics (2027, 3rd ed.)

I am delighted to share that the Third Edition of my textbook, Risk Analysis in Engineering and Economics, is now available for order from Chapman & Hall, Taylor and Francis. đź”— Order the book from Amazon

Engineering and economic decisions are rarely made with complete information. They require us to identify uncertainty, evaluate possible consequences, compare alternatives, and make rational choices under conditions of risk. This textbook provides the concepts and analytical methods needed to support such decisions, and includes new emerging risks and concepts in a well balanced style covering engineering, economics and related technologies drawing on many real-world projects spanning many aspects of physical-cyber-human systems.

The book is written for students and practitioners in engineering, science, economics, finance, insurance, and related fields. It progresses from fundamental principles to computational methods, data requirements, and real-world applications, with particular attention to both the capabilities and limitations of the methods presented.

The Third Edition continues the practical and interdisciplinary approach of the earlier editions while updating and strengthening the treatment of risk analysis and decision-making. Its eleven chapters bring engineering and economics together within a unified risk framework.

This edition includes:

  • Expanded material on risk management and risk finance
  • Enhanced coverage of economic valuation, risk tolerance, and risk attitudes in decision-making
  • Renewed emphasis on practical problem-solving
  • A greater diversity of examples from engineering, science, economics, insurance, and related areas
  • Detailed computational examples that enable students to understand and reproduce the calculations
  • Real-world case studies connecting analytical methods with practice
  • Enhanced exercises, including more challenging problems
  • Balanced treatment of the advantages, limitations, and appropriate uses of alternative risk-analysis methods

The book introduces the fundamentals needed to quantify uncertainty and support rational decision-making. It addresses risk-analysis methods, system definition and structure, reliability assessment, failure consequences and severity, engineering economics and finance, risk-control methods, and the collection and use of data for risk studies.

My objective has always been to connect theory with application. Risk analysis should not be treated simply as a collection of mathematical techniques. It is a disciplined way of thinking about uncertain futures: what might happen, how likely it is, what its consequences may be, and what actions can improve the outcome.

The Third Edition is intended for classroom instruction, professional reference, and self-study. It should be especially useful to engineers, analysts, researchers, managers, and decision-makers who must evaluate complex systems and allocate limited resources under uncertainty.

The book contains 620 pages and is published by Chapman & Hall/CRC as the 2027 Third Edition.

I hope this edition will continue to serve students, educators, researchers, and practicing professionals across disciplines. I welcome comments and feedback from readers at ba@umd.edu.

I am grateful to the many students, colleagues, instructors, and practitioners whose questions, experiences, and insights have contributed to the development of this work over the years.
